Chocolate Toffee Crack

What is the easiest but most amazing sweet or candy you know how to make? Mine was probably fudge or coconut ice before I first made this stuff I found on the interwebs called “Christmas Crack”.

It’s basically salted crackers embedded in crunchy butter toffee, topped with chocolate, sprinkled with salty pretzels, broken up cookies, more candy… anything you like!

First, line a baking tin with paper and cover the bottom with salty crackers like Salada.

I was so happy to discover this recipe, because not only is it ridiculously delicious, it incorporates that Skor/Heath Bar type cracking butter toffee which I have always wanted to know how to make.

Next, melt 125g each of butter and brown sugar and bring to the boil, then let bubble about 2 minutes. Pour this straight over the crackers. By the way, you could dot the crackers with peanut butter if you wanted.

My biggest problem with this stuff (apart from not eating all of it) is what to call it.

Smooth out the toffee.

It would be such a shame to only have to make it at Christmas because of its name.

Bake the toffee and crackers at 180 degrees C for about 8 minutes or until all the toffee is bubbling.

In the USA its made with Saltine crackers, and Chocolate Saltine Toffee sounds good. Only we don’t have Saltines Downunder. Instead, Salada crackers can be used. But Chocolate Salada Toffee sounds terrible! Thanks a lot Arnotts!

Let the toffee crackers cool a little then sprinkle over about 125-200g of chocolate (the exact quantity is up to you!)

So I’m going to go with Chocolate Toffee Crack. It’s as addictive as crack cocaine anyway. With the added bonus that it might actually be better for you.

When the chocolate has melted, smooth it out and sprinkle over pretzels, cookies, candy – whatever! This one has pretzels, broken chocolate cookies and a couple of teaspoons of ground coffee beans.

I promise: this is the best not-really baking you’ll ever make.

Let it set – the refrigerator will aid this process if you can’t wait for nature to take its course, then break into bits. Yum.

makes a 20x25cm tin (about 20 pieces)

ingredients

5 whole Salada crackers
125g butter
125g brown sugar
125g-200g chocolate (any colour you like!)
about 100g pretzels, broken cookies, mixed candy to top.

Line a baking tin with bake paper and cover the bottom of the tin with the crackers, trying to get the surface completely covered if possible. In a saucepan, melt the butter and brown sugar and bring to the boil, then let bubble about 2 minutes. Pour the hot toffee mixture straight over the crackers.  Smooth out the toffee and bake the toffeed crackers at 180 degrees Celsius for about 8 minutes or until all the toffee is bubbling. Remove from the oven and cool for about 5 minutes, then sprinkle over about 125-200g of chopped chocolate (the exact quantity is up to you!). When the chocolate has melted (after a few minutes), smooth it out and sprinkle over your chosen toppings, pressing them down a little.  Let your Chocolate Toffee Crack set (if you are desperate you can refrigerate it for about half an hour or so). Break into bits. Try not to eat all at once.
